Guillermina Hernandez-Raquet, from INSA Toulouse/INRAE presented her research about "Unveiling the potential of termite gut microbiome for lignin bioconversion” during a seminar at Kemicentrium on September 29, 2023.

Join us at Treesearch Insight 2023, a conference on characterisation and processing of materials from the forest, which will take place at Lund University May 24-25. Contributions from our team include a lecture in Biomass Steam Pretreatment, given by Professor Ola Wallberg, and poster presentations by PhD student Matilda Johansson and postdoc Isabela Mendes Bonfim.

LU Lignin is part of the IVA-100 list for 2023 with our project on the design of cell factories for the production of nylon from pulp and paper side streams (PIs: Magnus Carlquist,Marie Gorwa Grauslund). Prof. Dr. Christoph Wittmann from University of Saarland, Germany, was invited to give a seminar entitled “A field of dreams: lignin valorization using metabolically engineered microbes” on April 21, 2023. 

Nina Muratovksa successfully defended her PhD thesis entitled “Biosynthesis of capsaicinoids by recombinant Saccharomyces cerevisiae” on February 28, 2023. The opponent was Prof. Paola Branduardi from University of Milano-Bicocca, Italy. 

Krithika Ravi successfully defended her PhD thesis entitled “Towards bacterial valorization of low molecular weight lignin” on November 28, 2019. The opponent was Dr. Gregg Beckham from NREL, USA 

Dr. Gregg Beckham from NREL, USA was invited to give a seminar entitled "Biological and chemical approaches to valorize lignin" on 27 November, 2019 

Daniel Brink successfully defended his PhD thesis entitled “Understanding and improving microbial cell factories through Large Scale Data-approaches” on November 7, 2019. The opponent was Dr. Kiran Patil, EMBL, Germany. 

Kena Li presented her midterm seminar entitled Base-catalyzed depolymerization of Kraft lignin for low-molecular-mass compound production on June 20, 2019. The assigned reviewers were Prof. Anker Degn Jensen, DTU; Prof. Ola Wallberg, Lund University.

Mingzhe Sun successfully defended his PhD thesis entitled “Supercritical fluid chromatography and two-dimensional liquid chromatography. From new applications to technical innovations” on April 26, 2019. The opponent was Prof. Peter Schoenmakers, University of Amsterdam (NL). 

Price for best doctoral presentation at Ekmandagarna 2019

Congratulations to Krithika Ravi who participated in the Gunnar Sundblad session for young researchers on Ekmandagarna 2019 held in Stockholm. She won the competition and was awarded as the “bästa doktorandpresentation vid Ekmandagarna 2019”. The prize is a travel scholarship of SEK 50 000! The competition was organized in a pecha-kucha format, where the participants have to present their research using 20 slides in 20 seconds each slide. Krithika had 10 other competitors from LTH, KTH, Chalmers, Umeå, Karlstad, Linköping, Mittuniversitetet and Stockholm University.

Lignin project at the Innovation Summit on Wood-Based Materials

Christian Hulteberg has managed to convert a by-product from pulp manufacturing to a liquid that is chemically identical to gasoline. Read more Here.

New post-doc joins the lignin project

We are happy to welcome Dr Henrik Almqvist to our lignin team! Henrik has recently finished his PhD, where he was studying microbial conversion for production of carboxylic acids. He will be working at the Department of Chemical Engineering
